How TUFF WINCH Began

TUFF WINCH at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show

TUFF WINCH at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show

After noticing a need to deliver a reliable Australian made drum anchor winches to the boating/fishing community led by a strong expertise in electrical motors and worm drives, TUFF WINCH was born. Since our beginning in 2012 we have now manufactured and sold over 10,000 units for the Australian and overseas markets. We are proudly all Australian owned and made using all Australian labour and materials.

Only the Motor and Gearbox are imported from Italy. The switchgear is sourced overseas.

Australian Made

As we see more and more businesses move their manufacturing overseas, it’s crucially important we continue to support businesses who choose to remain local. TUFF WINCH choosing to manufacture in our amazing country in turn helps support local manufacturers and businesses as we source our winch components from other Aussie businesses keeping the art of Australian Made alive. We are very proud to be a part of the Australian Made Campaign.

Production Process

Production starts in our modern 1000+ s/m facilities in both Yatala, Queensland and Sunshine West, Melbourne. Every winch is welded, machined and constructed by hand to ensure the build integrity and quality is second to none. Using our in-house laser and CNC machine centre we never cut corners, you cannot look past the quality and construction of our drum anchor winches. Every TUFF WINCH drum is machined with beveled edges which is a unique feature of our brand no one else does this. This to ensure the drum is smooth to touch, reducing any risk of cutting your fingers and maintaining rope longevity.

316 Stainless Steel

Every TUFF WINCH product is constructed with high grade 316 Stainless Steel made here in Australia, with full assembly and welding process conducted in-house. Our winches feature 6mm thick drums that are machined beveled, and our solid stainless steel shafts are meticulously joined to our drums with welds for full strength and integrity.

Winch Specs

We use 316 Stainless steel for our frames, shafts and drums (laser cut in Queensland), and oversized and powerful IP66 rated European motors and gearboxes sourced from Italy that will withstand any weather condition when you're out in the Aussie waters. Our Drums feature stainless steel ball bearings with 25mm bores and 42mm for the outside diameter, as well as oversized stainless bearing caps. Solid spool shafts are minimum 25mm and the assembly spins on 2 triple sealed maintenance free bearings. TUFF WINCH is the only manufacturer to machine bevel the drums keeping your fingers safe from cuts and preserving rope longevity. The drive components including the motor and gearbox can be adjusted to 16 different positions, suitable for any application.

Efficient And Powerful Motors

Some winch manufacturers have caused confusion as to motor efficiencies and wattage. That’s why it pays to ask the experts at TUFF WINCH, the anchor winch manufacturers with the most expertise in the industrial power transmission and electric motor industry.

We utilise our own oversized motors sourced from our parent company Motordrives Australia Pty Ltd. Every anchor winch provides more power than you’ll ever need for an anchoring system and is suited to retrieve and drop any style anchor. They are Italian IP66 Motors that have been used in marine applications since 1983. TUFF WINCH utilises oversized motors on every drum winch for true efficiency and a longer lifespan. We don’t use aluminum sleeves that put your motor at risk of water ingress or corrosion over time. Every motor is designed to get wet and work effortlessly for years to come.

Power Transmission

When it comes to power transmissions, no other winch manufacturer has more knowledge or expertise than the team at TUFF WINCH. Our worm drive gearboxes come from an Italian specialised manufacturer and are prefilled with the highest grade fully synthetic oil, so you never have to worry about maintenance. They are also fully epoxy-coated providing protection from salt, water and other weather conditions for any marine application. We also have multiple ratio options available for customised applications where higher torque may be required.

IP Ratings

We get frequently asked about the IP rating as some manufacturers claim to have an IP68. They have to slip an aluminum sleeve over the motor to “protect” it from water damage, however this in turn can produce water-ingress issues overtime (ironic right?). Our motors and gearboxes don’t require this sleeve as they come epoxy-coated and sealed suited for many marine applications that require water protection, and have proven time and time again that they are built to last years, backed by our 5 year warranty.

TUFF WINCH Values Customer Support

When it comes to the value of our winches and customer support, no one comes close to the TUFF WINCH team. We sell direct online and in-house NOT through third parties. This allows us to keep our prices low for an amazing quality product and we are fully transparent with our product warranty (we don’t hide behind forcing customers to deal with the third party to honour a warranty). If you have any questions at any point during installation, maintenance queries or just want to learn more about our winches, we are available to contact at any time. We offer a 5 year warranty which we honour in-house.
